“Bluestocking” is a term first used in the 1700s to describe a group of people who decided to meet up and have intellectual conversations about science, art, philosophy, and literature. Guests were welcome to wear their informal blue woolen stockings instead of the expensive black silk ones that were in fashion at the time. Meetings encouraged thoughtful discourse and polite conversation, fostering an environment where women and men could participate equally in scholarly discussions.
